Welcome to Whitethorn Academy!

Great horses. Wonderful people. A place where everyone belongs.

Whether you're meeting a horse for the first time, returning to riding after years away, or looking to develop your existing skills, there's a place for you at Whitethorn Academy.

Located at Maitland Vale, just minutes north of Maitland CBD in the beautiful Lower Hunter Valley, Whitethorn offers a safe, friendly and inclusive environment where people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities can discover the joy of horses.

Our youngest riders start at just two years old. Our oldest beginner so far was 84!

More than learning to ride

At Whitethorn, we believe that learning to ride is about much more than sitting on a horse.

Our carefully structured lessons develop riding and horse-handling skills through practical exercises, games, challenges and confidence-building activities. Students progress at their own pace, with encouragement and support from experienced coaches.

Along the way, they develop independence, coordination, communication, resilience and a wonderful sense of personal achievement.

We teach all-round horsemanship, including safe horse handling, grooming, horse care and an understanding of how horses think and behave.

Everyone is welcome

Inclusion is at the heart of Whitethorn Academy.

We welcome children, teenagers and adults of different backgrounds, cultures, abilities and life experiences. We recognise that every individual has different strengths, interests, needs and goals, and we take the time to understand them.

Our approach is respectful, supportive and non-judgemental. We want every student to feel safe, valued and included, whether they're learning alongside others or working towards their own individual goals.

Additional needs and NDIS participants

Whitethorn has many years of experience supporting people with physical, intellectual, developmental, behavioural and psychological challenges.

We understand the importance of adapting activities to individual capabilities, providing appropriate support and working collaboratively with families, carers, support coordinators and allied health professionals.

Our horse-based activities can provide valuable opportunities to develop confidence, communication, physical coordination, independence and social participation.

Whitethorn Academy is not an NDIS-registered provider, but we have extensive experience working with NDIS participants and are familiar with NDIS funding and documentation requirements. We welcome enquiries from self-managed and plan-managed participants and their support teams.

All participation is subject to an individual assessment of suitability and our ability to provide a safe, appropriate environment for the participant, our staff and our horses.

Building confidence — at any age

Perhaps you rode when you were younger and would love to get back in the saddle, but you're not sure whether you still have the skills or confidence.

Or perhaps you've always wanted to ride, but anxiety or uncertainty has held you back.

We understand.

Our coaches have considerable experience helping nervous and returning riders rediscover their confidence through patient instruction, carefully selected horses and achievable challenges.

You don't have to be confident to begin. Helping you build confidence is part of what we do.

Discover a world of riding opportunities

Our lessons draw on a wide variety of equestrian disciplines, including dressage, show riding, sporting, showjumping, working equitation and cross-terrain riding.

This variety keeps lessons interesting and helps students develop versatile riding and horsemanship skills.

For riders interested in competition, our senior coaches have the experience and expertise to help them work towards their goals.

But competition is entirely optional. Many of our students simply love riding, spending time with horses and enjoying the friendships that develop along the way.

School holiday activities

School holidays bring extra opportunities for horse-loving children, teenagers and adults.

Our popular activities include:

Holiday Horsefun™ - a fun-filled half-day introduction to horses, especially for children with little or no riding experience.

Little Tackers Pony Playdates - delightful pony experiences for our youngest horse lovers, aged two to under seven.

Skillbuilder™ sessions - extended opportunities for registered students to develop their riding and horsemanship skills.

Private lessons and Friends and Family Funrides - activities we can tailor for individuals, friends and families.

Special clinics and activities - additional opportunities for riders to explore particular skills and interests.

Watch Hopoti and our Facebook page for each holiday's program.

Pony Club Australia Accredited Centre

Whitethorn Academy is proud to be a Foundation Accredited Centre with Pony Club Australia.

While we no longer offer a separate Pony Club Centre Member lesson program, our commitment to safe, progressive instruction and sound horsemanship remains central to everything we do.

Wonderful horses, experienced coaches and outstanding facilities

We're proud of the people, horses and facilities that make Whitethorn special.

Our coaches are experienced, knowledgeable and genuinely enjoy helping students achieve their individual goals.

Our horses and ponies are carefully selected, well educated and accustomed to working with riders of different ages and abilities. Many are registered Australian Stock Horses, alongside some very special ponies.

Our facilities include an Olympic-sized, fully lit covered riding arena, a second lit arena, dedicated jumping and activity areas, and extensive cross-terrain riding opportunities across our beautiful 100-acre property.

We also provide accessible bathroom facilities, designated accessible parking and a purpose-built mounting platform to assist riders with limited mobility.

Come and meet us!

Whether your goal is to learn to ride, regain your confidence, develop new skills or simply enjoy the wonderful world of horses, we'd love to hear from you.
